The Challenge
A Fortune 500 technology company was hosting a 2-day corporate leadership conference in the outdoor pavilion area adjacent to Honda Center. With 1,500 expected attendees — including several executives and team members with mobility disabilities — the client required a restroom solution that went well beyond minimum ADA compliance.
The client specifically requested that accessibility be a seamless part of the experience, not an afterthought. They wanted ADA units integrated alongside standard units rather than isolated in a separate area.
Our Assessment
During our site visit, we identified three key placement zones in the outdoor pavilion area: the main conference tent entrance, the networking lounge, and the dining area. We also evaluated:
- Ground surface accessibility — all pathways needed to accommodate wheelchairs
- Unit spacing — enough room for wheelchair approach and turning radius
- Proximity to accessible parking and the main venue entrance
- Clear signage requirements for accessible units
The Solution
We deployed 22 units across 3 zones, with an emphasis on integrated accessibility:
- 10 ADA-accessible units — wider doors, grab bars, wheelchair-height seats, and spacious interiors. Placed at every restroom cluster (not separated)
- 6 deluxe porta potties — upgraded units with hand wash sinks and interior lighting for the corporate setting
- 6 portable hand washing stations — positioned at each cluster with ADA-height basins
We placed plywood pathway panels on any soft ground between the ADA parking area and restroom clusters, ensuring wheelchair-accessible routes to every unit.
Results
The client's post-event survey specifically highlighted the restroom facilities as a positive — a rare occurrence for portable restrooms. Multiple attendees with mobility needs noted that the accessible units were convenient, clean, and well-placed.
